About Department
The history of the cooperative movement in India dates back to 1904, when the Co-operative Credit Societies Act was enacted to provide loans to citizens on easy terms through cooperative institutions. This marked the beginning of the cooperative movement in India, laying the foundation for organized rural and urban credit systems. Initially, only two types of committees — for urban and rural areas — were formed under this Act.

About Uttarakhand
Located at the foothills of the Himalayan mountain ranges, Uttarakhand is largely a hilly state, sharing international boundaries with China (Tibet) in the north and Nepal in the east. Known as the “Devbhumi” (Land of the Gods), the state is renowned for its spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and rich cultural traditions.
Formed on 9th November 2000, Uttarakhand comprises 13 districts divided between the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. Home to the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna, it is both a major pilgrimage destination and a center of agricultural and cooperative development. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Uttarakhand, works towards empowering local communities and promoting self-reliance through cooperative institutions across the state.
